Most of us can care for ourselves, some care for others, but can we care for other species? The world around us is filled with other life forms than our own. Self awareness must necessarily involve awareness of other life different from our own and analyzing how that life differs and acknowledging the similarities in the comparisons made.
Most do not want to and so they have not pets, no house plants and live in what I consider a cold and sterile environment devoid of life except their own. Is this the kind of future we want? I certainly hope not and so teaching others about our love and concern for other life species on earth is a preventative measure and one that might preserve what we value and call life. Appreciating the complexities and interdependencies of life coexisting in a common environment only happens if one not only cares about their own well being but that of others as well.
One of the reasons I like fish, my Pekingese, and other pets common in households is that they are much less complicated creatures than man, the earth's most life threatening critter! I am learning by interacting with my Pekingese and the Koi/goldfish I keep and enjoy. My ability to socially interact with others improves as I share what I have learned with them and they respond with their stories of care and concern similarly. Sometimes I must learn new medical care as well as routine and behavior care in additions to understanding how to provide the proper healthy living environment as needed for their care.
My 5 indoor fantail goldfish are beautiful and I enjoy watching them closely as they have grown in size and personalities. Up to today, the tank and they have been extraordinarily healthy. This morning one of the oranda's (red cap on white color body and tail) came up to me looking me in the eye and showed me her right edge of her fantail so that I could see what was wrong and she was in effect asking for help.... commonly referred to as tail rot ... or fin rot so off to the Internet I go to find out what to do .... and did I ever find a lot of helpful information after typing in goldfish diseases ... Please let me share with you some basics and just maybe you will respond with interest or just maybe go buy yourself an aquarium for you and your family to enjoy in your home.
